Pattern is a fantastic way to spice up a room without the need to add too much color. Lets take a look at some examples, with a particularly simple color palette of navy blue and white:

Cream and navy blue living room. One detail that makes a great difference in adding a nautical feel is wood paneling half or one fourth of the way up to the ceiling. Keeping the Background light and accessorizing with navy blue does the trick.

A perfect mix of clean color surfaces and pattern is key. Stripes and plaid are both great for the nautical theme. When mixing pattern, be sure to pick very different patterns to go together, not two different striped patterns, but rather one striped and one checkered.
